Where to go for extra help and advice

There are lots of free, easily accessible online resources where you can find more information about self-care and how to prevent the onset of serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes:

  • NHS Choices is a comprehensive website which gives you reliable advice on many conditions, it also allows you to search for services and has a wide range of tools to help you better manage your care such as a symptom checker.
  • The Self-Care Forum aims to reach out to patients and the public about self-care and make it a part of everyday life. The site has lots of resources and information packs on how to self-care.
  • Pharmacists are a good first port of call. They are medically trained and can give you lots of self-care and recommend what medicine to take. Many pharmacies now also have a consultation room so you can discuss any issues in private as you would with your GP. Many pharmacies are open later at night and at weekends. You don’t need an appointment to visit your pharmacist and it is often more convenient than going to your GP practice.
  • Patient is a trusted online medical resource that has lots of evidence based information on a wide range of medical, health and wellbeing topics.

If it is urgent but not an emergency, call NHS 111 (available 24/7, 365 days a year), their fully trained advisors will be able to advise you on what to do.

What if I need medicine outside surgery or pharmacy opening hours?

It is worth keeping an eye on your medicine cabinet to make sure that you have enough medication to self-care and that it is all in date. If you do run out of medication and require some urgently, there are a few ways to get hold of an emergency supply, even if you are away from home. The NHS Choices website takes you through what you will need to do.
