Bradford Beating Diabetes takes its message to Bradford shoppers

The Bradford Beating Diabetes (BBD) campaign is joining forces with local radio station Pulse to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes among Bradford shoppers on Friday (8 April).

NHS staff from the BBD team will be out and about with Pulse at the Asda store in Cemetery Road from 11am to 2pm – chatting to shoppers about Type 2 diabetes, how to prevent it and the support available if they are at risk.

The event will get the message out loud and clear to local people who could be at risk of Type 2 diabetes, but may not even know it. The BBD team will be handing out leaflets and talking to people about recognising the warning signs of the disease.

The NHS team will also be offering free diabetes tests on the day.

People can also pick up healthy living tips and learning how a healthy diet, including fruit and vegetables, can help prevent and control diabetes.

But behind the fun event is a serious message: there are thousands of people in Bradford who are at risk of developing the most common type of diabetes, Type 2.

The BBD campaign, run by NHS Bradford City and NHS Bradford Districts clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), offers people the chance to improve their health by getting a diabetes check-up and, if needed, advice and support to improve their lifestyle and cut their diabetes risk.

Dr Sohail Abbas, diabetes lead at Bradford City CCG, said: “We hope as many people as possible come along to see us on Friday because we want to prevent as many people as we can from developing Type 2 diabetes, as well as providing excellent care and advice to those who have the condition.

“The number of people living with, and at high risk of, Type 2 diabetes is rising locally and nationally; but our message is that catching it early, with treatment and changes to diet and exercise, could help people control the condition much more easily. Many people are able to prevent the disease completely.”

The CCGs are working with thousands of people who have been identified as being at high risk of developing diabetes.

Letters are being sent to all those people who are already at moderate or high risk, so they come to their GP practice for another blood test to check their glucose levels – a key indicator of diabetes. Then, depending on the results, they will be offered a tailor-made package of treatment and advice.

Adverts are currently running on Pulse and Sunrise Radio across Bradford to raise awareness of diabetes and help people learn more about the risk factors and what local NHS support is available to help people stay well and healthy.

The BBD campaign has been recognised for its innovation; it is one of seven demonstrator sites for the National NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.
