Bradford and Airedale smokers spurred on by Stoptober campaign

Bradford and Airedale’s smokers were spurred on by the recent Stoptobercampaign – and it proved to be a resounding success.

More smokers than ever sought the support of the local NHS stop smoking service, and they saw a big increase on the numbers seeking help to stop smoking during last October compared with the previous year.

The Stoptober campaign urged smokers to stop for the full month. Research has showed that those smokers who manage to stop for a month are more likely to carry on and become non-smokers for good.

That was the case for Harry Metcalf, from Eccleshill, who called the stop smoking service after seeing an article in the local press about Stoptober.

Harry, who used to be a 20-a-day smoker, said:
“I found the support from my stop smoking specialist very helpful. Without her help and encouragement I wouldn’t have been able to manage to stop – I’m so pleased I’m now a non-smoker.”

Lorraine Wolfenden, manager of the stop smoking service, said:
“We’re really pleased that Harry managed to stop successfully with our help. We know that getting the support from a trained stop smoking advisor and using stop smoking medications means you’re up to four times more likely to stop smoking for good. It’s really rewarding to hear comments like Harry’s about how helpful he found us. Stoptober has proved to be very successful.

“We’re here all year round for any smoker living or working in Bradford and Airedale who is thinking of stopping smoking. Even if you have tried before and not managed that time, with the help and support of your local stop smoking service you can do it!”
