Why you should get involved
We know that a great patient experience when using our health service is not only fundamentally important to you but also leads to better health outcomes.
We encourage and welcome feedback on health and care experiences, as set out in the NHS Constitution and want to use this to improve services. Most importantly;
- putting patients and the public at the heart of everything we do;
- promoting and embedding a patient focused culture within the NHS;
- ensuring that patient and public voice is not just heard, but actively used to inform commissioning decisions taken by the CCGs;
- enhancing experience to better outcomes.
Patient experience is one of the three elements of high quality care alongside clinical effectiveness and safety (Lord Darzi, High Quality Care for All).
Getting involvement from patients and the public is hugely important to us because;
- poor patient experience and poor health outcomes are linked to health inequalities. Where health inequalities are the greatest, experience of services tends to be poor.
- there is strong evidence about the links between patient experience and clinical safety and effectiveness.
- patient involvement in decision-making and effective communication is strongly associated with improved patient safety and better self-reported clinical outcomes.
- poorer outcomes are achieved and health resources wasted when patients do not feel involved or do not understand the treatment they are offered.
The valuable insight and information that you give helps us to:
- see what people are saying about the services we are responsible for planning and buying;
- understand people’s experiences of local health services;
- highlight areas for further exploration and understanding;
- identify areas for improvement and/or development in planning and buying health services;
- enable the active participation of patients and public in decisions about the health services they use;
- ensure that action is taken on the feedback.
